Endodontic Retreatment

With proper care, you may keep teeth that have had root canal treatment for a lifetime, but it is possible for those teeth to not heal properly, becoming painful or diseased months or even years after treatment. If this happens to your treated teeth you may have a second chance to save the tooth with retreatment. An additional procedure similar to root canal therapy may be able to diminish dental pain or discomfort and promote healing.

Retreatment may be needed for your tooth due to a variety of reasons. This includes narrow or curved canals that were not treated during the initial procedure, complicated canal anatomy, or a delay in the placement of the crown or other restoration following the initial endodontic treatment.

Retreatment is performed using local anesthesia similar to a dental filling. During retreatment, a small access is made in the tooth similar to the initial root canal treatment, and the previous filling material within the tooth is removed. The tooth is carefully examined for additional canals or new infection. The tooth is thoroughly disinfected and cleaned followed by placement of a new filling material.
