Sensitivity to Cold or Hot Foods/Drinks

Possible problem: Generally, this does not indicate a serious problem, unless the sensitivity lingers for an extended period of time following eating. This is likely due to a small cavity/crack, loose filling, or gum recession that exposes a portion of the root surface.

What to do: Try using sensitive toothpaste and brushing with a soft or extra-soft toothbrush. If the issue persists, it is time to see your dentist.

Sensitivity to Cold or Hot Foods/Drinks
Following Dental Treatment

Possible problem: It is common to have inflammation within the pulp inside the tooth following dental work that causes a temporary sensitivity. This symptom typically resolves on its own within a few weeks.

What to do: Wait two to four weeks for the pain to resolve. If after this time, the pain persists or worsens, it is time to see your dentist to check for a more serious issue.

Sharp Pain to Biting

Possible problem: This painful symptom may be caused by a cavity, a loose filling, or a crack inside the tooth. There may also be damage to the pulp tissue inside the tooth.

What to do: See your dentist for evaluation and they may refer you to our office for root canal therapy.

Lingering Pain after Eating, Spontaneous Pain, or Pain at Night

Possible problem: These are all symptoms of severe damage to the pulp and likely indicate that the tooth will need root canal therapy.

What to do: Call our office at 317-674-3919 and ask to be seen as soon as possible. We may be able to see you today!
